On the other hand there is a longer running trend towards media consolidation. Enormous corporations scooping up small and midsized media organizations until those corporations absolutely dominate the professional landscape.

So which is it? Are we in decentralized crankish hell, or are we in a centralized propaganda regime?

Neither lens tells the whole story, but centralization is the actual danger we ought to be focused on fighting.
