Editor's Notes: Taking Ideology Seriously
The power of the ideological environment should not be underestimated.
The power of the ideological environment should not be underestimated.
Between 1914 and 1918 the supposed "concert of Europe" had perished in flames and mud. The idea of European "civilization" as somehow different from or superior to "barbarism" had passed into history. Starting in 1929, the world was wracked by the Great Depression. It seemed that liberal democratic capitalism no longer had answers sufficient to the day.
There are material and structural causes one may point to for the rise of authoritarian movements around the globe in those interwar years. But the ideological environment cannot be underrated. Why did so many millions of people, why did elites and masses both, converge around ideas of grand breaks with the world that was, the ruthless enforcement of a new order and a new man? Because the old world had discredited itself.
Since 2017, Liberal Currents has strived to change the ideological environment for the better. Now, we are as big and as influential as we have ever been, but it isn't enough.
We need your help to keep growing, to keep pulling our media system in a more truly liberal direction so that we can hope for more than just winning the next election.
