Editor's Notes: A Labor of Love

I call Liberal Currents a community, and we use the word everywhere. In our writings on ourselves, in our description of the Discord server, in conversations about the publication. This is not some marketing tactic: we are a community. We always have been.

A little less than ten years ago, when Donald Trump won his first election, Jason Briggeman said that we ought to make a liberal publication. The socialists have Jacobin, other elements of the left have their own publications, but there was not truly a liberal one, because the liberals by and large treated liberalism like the air they breathed.

Liberal values and ideas needed defending more than ever, and this only became more urgent over the years. My first child was born on December 2nd, 2016. Jason, as well as Paul Crider, each had children on the way in early 2017. We were not happy about the presidency our children were being born into, and ten years in I can't say I'm happy about the world that MAGA has made for our children.

This was always personal. This was always a place where friends and fellow travelers gathered, from the beginning. For years, that was the main thing that it was.
