Editor's Notes: "My Generals"

From the very beginning of his first term, Trump would speak of "my generals" and "my military."

Trump is the most vulgarly personalist president the country has ever had, bar none. He treats the White House as though it is simply his private property. He treats the military as if it is his and the generals as if they are his employees. He's trying to stamp his name and face on absolutely every government building in DC.

Another way it has grown worse in his second term is that his political appointees act more like campaign staff than public servants.

Since December 5, 2024, Liberal Currents has been publishing essays on the dangers of personalist authoritarians and the ways in which the Trump administration aspires to consolidate a regime of that kind.
