Editor's Notes: Liberalism Punches Back

Yesterday in Brazil, incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Flávio Bolsonaro—the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro—in the election for the presidency.

There are some institutional details that made this possible, but I do want to note that Brazil was not alone in its victory: Serbia's Aleksandar Vučić was defeated as well. He was seeking to become prime minister after two terms as president, a move in the Putin playbook for semi-presidential systems like this one—unsurprising for someone who was, indeed, publicly endorsed by Putin.

Here in the US we have the midterms finally wrapping up a week from tomorrow, but Israel is also having an election tomorrow, the first since October 7 and the slaughter in Gaza began.

The below discusses what can and can't be learned from the victories and potential victories mentioned above.
