Americans Are Angry. The Democratic Base Is Furious.

Perhaps you heard about a poll we published last week in partnership with the Center for Strategic Politics.

It had a few items of interest in it. Kamala Harris leading the poll on 2028 primary candidates, trailed by Gavin Newsom. Fifty-two percent of Democrats believe we should abolish the filibuster and 69 percent believe the next Democratic president should expand the Supreme Court. Somewhat surprisingly, as many as 39 percent believe that restaurants should be publicly owned and operated.

Then there was this question:

I will be crystal clear that that top result in particular is not one that Liberal Currents is cheering. We have been very consistent: democracy is the only acceptable answer, even when voters choose poorly. Democracy does not mean you lie down and take whatever abuse elected officials visit upon you, nor do you sit back and watch while they dismantle free and fair elections. You confront them, as the people of Minneapolis did, as Americans have done daily since the second Trump administration began. You organize to win, to win the elections and to win the politics long term.

The poll, and that question in particular, caught the attention of the right wing:

Nor was the attention limited to Republicans posting on X. A number of right-wing media outlets wrote about the poll:

Now, of course, it has to be said, and should be said: One of the two parties actually attempted a coup, very recently, and that party was not the Democrats.

Furthermore, both before and since January 6, 2021, right-wing posters and publications have stoked up an atmosphere of violence and impunity for their side. That atmosphere on the right has now progressed so far that Republican officials in 2026 will tolerate nominees for office who have called for the execution of Democratic leaders:

And now, in this environment, in 2026, the New York Post is shocked, and says it's "lunacy," that a lot of Americans wouldn't mind if an 80-year-old politician that they dislike were to peacefully pass away in his sleep?

Really?

The results of our survey are indeed disturbing. But they just serve to highlight the stakes of getting the next few years, indeed the next few election cycles, right.
